A scholarship is a financial award given to a student on the basis of academic achievement and promise. Scholarships do not have to be repaid. The various types of scholarships are:

Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Government of Canada  
CIFAR Global Scholars Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) The CIFAR Global Scholars is designed to build research and leadership capacity at a critically early stage of career development. The program istargeted to individuals who have completed their PhD within the three years before the starting date of an advertised Global Scholar position and have demonstrated outstanding scholarship and research potential.
CIHR Fellowship Canadian Institutes of Health Research Fellowships provide support for highly qualified candidates at the post-PhD or post-health professional degree stages to add to their experience by engaging in health research either in Canada or abroad.
IDRC Doctoral Research Awards International Development Research Centre (IDRC) IDRC offers these awards to Canadians, permanent residents of Canada, and citizens of developing countries pursuing their doctoral studies at a Canadian university to support field research in one or more developing countries.
IDRC Research Awards International Development Research Centre (IDRC) IDRC offers these research awards annually to Canadians, permanent residents of Canada, and citizens of developing countries pursuing masters or doctoral studies at a recognized university or having completed a master’s or doctoral program at a recognized university. As a research award recipient, one will undertake a one-year paid program of research on the topic submitted when competing for the award. During part of the time, the individual will be trained in research management through hands-on experience with chosen program. under the mentorship of a program officer.
Industrial Postgraduate Scholarships Program Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Industrial Postgraduate Scholarships (IPS) provides financial support for highly qualified science and engineering graduates.These scholarships are aimed at encouraging scholars to consider research careers in industry.
Industrial Research and Development Internship (IRDI) Program Networks of Centres of Excellence of Canada The mission of the IRDI program is to introduce graduate students and post-doctoral fellows to practical business problems and provide them with the opportunity to apply their scientific and technical expertise to address the needs of participating businesses, as well as to create a medium that will facilitate increased private investments in R&D. The IRDI program is open to all research areas.
Mitacs Elevate Mitacs Mitacs Elevate supports postdoctoral fellows and Canadian companies and partners to collaborate on research projects and build capacity for the next generation of R&D management leaders.
Mitac Globalink Mitacs Mitacs Accelerate is research internship program. It connects companies with over 50 research-based universities through graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, who apply their specialized expertise to business research challenges.

Strategic Training Initiative in Health Research (STIHR) Canadian Institutes of Health Research The purpose of Strategic Training Program Grants is to build capacity within Canada’s health research community through the training and development of researchers, and foster the development and ongoing support of the careers in health research.

B. CRITERIA FOR SCHOLARSHIPS

Most of the scholarships are awarded on merit and competitive basis for which students need to directly approach each schoolfor relevant scholarship aid.The amount and type of award differ from institution to institution.
